Year 5 /6 M 2018 - 2019

Mrs Metcalfe

Welcome to Yr5/6M class page. Here you will get a flavour of what the children are doing in school at the moment.

Homework is normally given out on a Friday and consists of a SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) task and a Maths activity. Regular practise of x tables should be done at home as well as daily opportunities for your child to read for twenty minutes.

****All children are now fully registered on our TT Rockstars programme which is designed to improve their rapid recall of all times tables and the linked inverse division calculations. Children across the whole school have been getting very competitive, even the teachers are getting involved in challenges with pupils and other teachers!*****

We do Accelerated Reading every afternoon from 1:20-1:45 and children are now competing to get into our 'Golden Club'. In order for children to achieve this, they must be scoring atleast 85% on the quizzes completed when they have read a book. Children must also be reading 20 minutes per day if in Year 5 or 25 minutes per day for Year 6 children. Opportunities for children to practise reading their quiz books at home will improve their chances of getting into the Golden Club and receiving a treat at the end of each term.

In Maths during the Spring term, our focus is Fractions. We will spend all of this half term looking at this topic.

Year 6 children should have now ordered their Revision books. All children were given an order form for parents to complete and return along with the money to purchase the books.

In Literacy, we have been reading graphic novel 'The Invisible Man'. The children have loved the story so far and we have completed a wide range of written pieces, from Newspaper reports to diary entries to monologues and missing chapters. Please take a look at some samples of work on our class page.

We have a student teacher working full time in class with us now for the next six weeks. She will be supporting children in small groups and teaching some subjects towards the end of her time with us.

In Geography, we will be looking at Natural Disasters. Children have been asked to carry out a project at home around a chosen natural disaster of their choice.

In Science, children are looking at 'Electricity' with Mrs Bruce each Wednesday. They will have the opportunity to carry out investigations, experimenting with circuit making.

During ICT lessons, children will be using lap tops to carry out research about an historical topic 'The Three Monarchs' which will be our history focus for this next term. They will study Queen Elizabeth I. Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II, comparing their power and influence on our country and across the world. This is our current Histroy topic for Spring term.
