Year 5 /6 M 2017 - 2018

Mrs Metcalfe

Welcome to Yr5/6M class page. Here you will get a flavour of what the children are doing in school at the moment.

Children need to bring their PE kits in every Monday and our current sport is American Football which is taught by Coach Rose. The children are enjoying playing this and have recently taken part in a Year 5 and 6 tournament. St David's were the overall winners of the tournament with St George's as runners up. All of the children took part and it was an enjoyable morning.

Homework is normally given out on a Friday and consists of a SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) task and a Maths activity. Children are also given ten spellings each Friday and tested the following Friday. Regular practise of x tables should be done at home as well as daily opportunities for your child to read at home for twenty minutes.

We do Accelerated Reading every afternoon from 1:20-1:45 and children are now competing to get into our 'Golden Club'. In order for children to achieve this, they must be scoring atleast 85% on the quizzes completed when they have read a book. Children must also be reading 20 minutes per day if in Year 5 or 25 minutes per day for Year 6 children. Opportunities for children to practise reading their quiz books at home will improve their chances of getting into the Golden Club and receiving a treat.

Our current topic is World War Two and we are reading The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne. Children have engaged well with this text and have completed a variey of extended writing pieces such as a diary entry, a letter, a non-chronolgocial report, a missing chapter and children have also examined and recited well known war poems during their lessons with Miss Carr. Yr 6's recently visited the Plaza cinema to watch a film based on a true story about Alex, a young, Jewish boy surviving the Holocaust by hiding out in the dangerous Jewish ghetto's of Poland.

Year 6 children went on a trip this week to the Western Approaches museum and Year 5 children have the same trip planned next week. This was a memorable visit for all staff and children with a very passionate guide informing the children of the significant role the WWII bunker and all those intelligence staff working within it, played throughout the Battle of the Atlantic.

In Maths, we spent last half term revising calculation strategies; column addition and subtraction, short and long multiplication, grid method, short division and will be moving on to long division. During lessons with Miss Carr, children have been looking at Measuring and Problem Solving. This half term she is focusing on Reasoning and Problem Solving. We are now looking at fractions and the children have been using the Bar Model to support their learning.

In R.E we have been learning about Missions. We have been discussing what our own missions in life are and how they can be similar to the missions carried out by Jesus.

In Geography with Miss Carr, children have been learning about the countries of Europe and using Atlas' to support this work.

In Science, children have carried out practical investigations, exploring circuits for our Electricity topic and now examining living things for our new, current topic.Children have studied living things in our environment and have recently started a project on Charles Darwin for our new Evolution and Inheritance topic.

Children have been using lap tops to make WW2 powerpoints and i-pads to carry out research about an historical topic. They have just started our new ICT topic that looks at website design and have been learning how to screenshot web pages and annotate effective features of particular websites using a word document.

Mrs Grey has been doing Art with the children every Friday and they have been looking recently at War posters and designed their own. As part of our new topic, children will be visiting the Tate to explore pop art.
